Paragraph Writing with Conjunctions and Adverbs of Time

Essays are made of paragraphs that have meaning together.  Paragraphs are made of sentences that having meaning together.  Conjunctions (conj.) are used to help put the sentences and paragraphs together so that they mean more together.  This page is written to help you understand how to use different conjunctions (conj.) and adverbs (adv.) of time to combine or change simple sentences to make them better for a paragraph or essay.

The Conjunction "and"

Conjunctions are used to combine two sentences together.  The two most common conjunctions are "and" and "but".  You know how "and" is used to combine two words together, and that you can only combine words with the same grammar labels, but there are other rules for sentences.

And vs. But

"And" is used to connect positive (+) things to positive (+) things OR negative (-) things to negative (-) things.  
"But" is used to connect positive (+) things to negative (-) things OR negative things (-) to positive (+) things.
